Working Appliances

Don’t throw appliances that are still working in the trash.  Opt for the REUSE option in the 3Rs and give your clean and gently used items a new home.  Check out the organizations below to learn which appliances (large and/or small) they will accept.

Donate small working appliances, e.g., blenders, mixers, microwaves, toasters, toaster ovens,  to Goodwill, It is suggested that you call before you drop off your donation.  They do not take large appliances.

The Rescue Mission accepts donations of small household appliances: microwave, blender, toaster, etc. They will also accept some large appliances in working condition including appliances incorporating Compressors or Freon (Air Conditioner, Refrigerator), as well as other large appliances such as washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers etc.  They suggest that you call to learn more.

You can either drop off your donation or arrange for pick up via their website at their Donate Goods page.  Type in your zip code and hit Go and you will land at a donation specific page where you can fill out the form to find out if pickup service is available, (or call 1-800-SA-TRUCK.)

Vietnam Veterans of America

Donations to this non profit organization helps to generate funds to take care of returning soldiers and service men and women.  They provides pickup (usually with 24 hours) for all types of goods including small  appliances such as microwaves, blenders, toasters, and coffee makers.  Large appliances such as washer/Dryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and stoves cannot be accepted.

Schedule an online donation pickup for almost anything small and light enough for the driver to carry.  Check out their list of acceptable items.

Non Working Appliances

Non working small appliances can dropped off at the Ewing Township Convenience Center at the Department of Public Works at 136 Scotch Road, a service for Ewing Township residents only with proof of residency.

Refrigerators

NJ Clean Energy Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling Program
You can participate in the NJ Clean Energy program and earn $50 when you purchase a new energy star model refrigerator or freezer and recycle your old refrigerator with them.  They will even collect it.  For more information see their Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling program.

[If your old refrigerator is going to be hanging around for awhile, don’t forget to secure or remove the door to prevent injury to those who will move it and to prevent children from playing in it.]

General Electric (GE) RAD Program: Responsible Appliance Disposal
The RAD program, GE Appliances’ product recycling initiative , is offered at participating Home Depot stores.   The Ewing Home Depot does participate in the program.  After purchasing a new refrigerator with home delivery, your new refrigerator will be delivered to you and your old refrigerator will be taken away to be recycled.

Scrap Metal Yards

Scrap metal yards will harvest the metal in your unwanted, broken appliances and sell it.  For that reason they are willing to pay you (price dependent on going rates) for metal items that you drop off at their facilities.  They will accept a variety of metal products.  Call for more information:

A scrap metal service business for residents and businesses alike.  Sims will buy your broken large appliances, cars, computer towers (no monitors  or TVs) and turn them into scrap at a shredding facility in Fairless Hills.  They pay the going rate for the metal in the items that they recycle such as steel, aluminum or copper.  Cars must have titles and refrigerators/freezers and air conditioners must have the freon removed first.  Call for more information.   Open Mon – Sat.

Free Metal Take It
A scrap metal service business that picks up and recycles unwanted scrap metal products for free (with some stipulations).  Located in Piscataway, they do service the Ewing area.  There may be a small mileage charge for small pickups.  Check their website for specifics on possible fees and restrictions.
